I revived an old music blog from the early 2000s?

Maybe it’s been a foolish endeavor, and maybe I’m the only one who misses the blog ol’ days, but I’ve been giving it a shot. I’ve been working on restoring some of the old content, though much of it was lost. I’ve slowly been rebuilding the old remix sunday archives, and even posting the occasional new edition. And I’ve been writing again.

You can find all the label’s releases here, on bandcamp, or most anywhere you listen to music these days. I’ve still got copies of some of the old vinyl releases, and I recently released the first in a set of charitable cassette compilations to raise awareness about the continued [mis]use of broken windows policing methods.

Plus, I put together a playlists section with a handful of spotify lists that hopefully start to capture a [slightly] updated version of the moods we used to peddle. Give those a listen and a ❤ if you would be so kind. If you want to get in touch, just give me a holler.

From top to bottom of the ladder, greed is aroused without knowing where to find ultimate foothold. Nothing can calm it, since its goal is far beyond all it can attain. Reality seems valueless by comparison with the dreams of fevered imaginations; reality is therefore abandoned.

He’s a freelance journalist for several print magazines and an active DJ in the New York party scene. As he’s known for his eclectic taste, we thought it appropriate that James be our special contributor for this last Remix Sunday of 2009.

  • Solo Loves Garage

Solo has come a long way from the 14 year old who made a habit of ‘smoking spliffs and doing dodgy heavy metal covers’ to being the forefather of a hugely exciting sub-genre and a producer whose tunes have found their way into the record bags of DJs in practically every scene. Like his countrymen Mowgli and Riva Starr, Solo makes the sort of music that will go down well in just about any clubbing environment – so it comes as no surprise that he’s now starting to remix and produce original bits with some heavy hitters. The latest reworking is of UK-Grime king Wiley, and features Emeli Sandè singing riffing on the haunting 1997 White Town track ‘(Never Be) Your Woman’ – a track that I’ve not heard in years!

From the future: the man behind Solo now does music under his real name, Stefano Ritteri, and runs the pretty excellent Spaziale and Viaggio imprints.

“Men regard it as their right to return evil for evil and, if they cannot, feel they have lost their liberty”
    Aristotle

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done one of these. Over the past year and a half, as Palms Out has transitioned more and more into releasing music as a label, and in the face of various legalish issues, once consistent features like Remix Sunday and Sample Wednesday have had to take a backseat. But from now on, expect Remix Sundays & Sample Wednesdays to come around a couple of times a month, with contributions from the whole Palms Out family, not just little ol’ me anymore. And while we can’t cater to all your individual tastes, we both hope you can appreciate the sense of variety we try to provide, and the time and hard work we put into collecting this music for you.

After a difficult shift from blogspot, and with a full server hard drive failure (we lost pretty much eeeverything), Palms Out is now proud to be self sustaining, speedier than ever, backed up, and wordpress ready, all thanks to the extremely helpful StudentVsTeacher. Thanks for sticking with us for so long, we appreciate all the consistent submissions and emails of support and criticism, and I personally apologize to the thousands of people who haven’t heard back from us, we do really love you. I hope you enjoy.

  • CFCF – You Hear Colours

    CFCF – “You Hear Colours”

CFCF is current with the second release on the boutique Acephale label. The A-side is complete with a video from Tommy Boy. This new sophisticated sound from CFCF is a pleasant change which will be surely be welcomed by fans of Italians Do It Better. Is Balearic Disco the future sound of Canada?

CFCF – “You Hear Colours” (bc)

From the future: the original 7″ release was on Acephale, but this song was rereleased as part of CFCF’s Continents LP on Paper Bag Records.

Simian Mobile Disco – “10000 Horses Can’t Be Wrong”

More genius work for Simian Mobile Disco from Bok Bok & Kate Moross!

  • Zombie Disco Squad – Eurovision

Sound Pellegrino is a new sublabel under Institubes, led creatively by Teki Latex & Orgasmic. They enjoy bouncy house music that isn’t too hard, and isn’t too soft. House that gets you dancing, but doesn’t take itself too seriously. You could try to label it (and many already have)- but why? genres kill music.

The first release being offered is a serious killer- from Palms Out favorites Zombie Disco Squad. Two boingy boinging songs, both led by accordions and boofy sub bass. Remix duties are handled by Solo & Mowgli.

Zombie Disco Squad – “Eurovision” (sc)

  • Male Stripper

In the 1990’s I’d sneak off to the now legendary Superstars of Love raves that were thrown in and around St Louis, Missouri. According to story, the duo took a road trip to New York to purchase crates and crates of records from the partner of a well-known Italo Disco DJ who had just passed.

“Male Stripper” was one of those tracks they often dropped. And for a lot of us, (though some remember better than others) it was one of the defining song in raves that would eventually usher in the Italo/Electro Revival of a few years ago…

  • Jesper Dahlbäck Gave Me a Present

Last week, I went to jesperdahlback.com. There was an ascii art image of Jesper with a small link that read, “Here’s a present” – the present was five tracks. Some of the present reminds me of Luke Eargoggle, while others sound like a continuation of the path he’s been taking as he journeys back to his roots.

    Jesper Dahlbäck – “Psycho 20” (mp3)

    Jesper Dahlback – “Psycho 49“ (mp3)
    Jesper Dahlback – “Psycho 63“ (mp3)
Jesper Dahlback – “Psycho” (Acid) (mp3)
Jesper Dahlback – “Spagat” (Flanger) (mp3)

From the future: “Spagat” (Flanger) seems to have been lost to the sands of time. If anyone has it, please drop me a line.

From further in the future: Found it!

  • Filur – 20 Lashes

Filur – “20 Lashes” (feat. Prins Nitram)

  • CFCF

We here at the Palms Out office have been so busy. So to take a much needed break from staring at our computers–while taking a conference call with Boody and Urchin–Stark, Leif and I started a game of 2-on-1 game of wastepaper basketball (Leif is really tall). A song came on over our vintage hifi and Boody kept talking but me and Stark were kicking Leif’s ass with so many points and we couldn’t hear Haldan talking and then he yelled and if you know Boody, he’s not a yeller and when he does it’s scary! “JOEE, WHAT IS THAT SONG?!”

It was the A-side to CFCF’s upcoming vinyl-only release on Acephale. Boody asked if we could get some more CFCF because we’ve been getting a lot of mail requesting lower-bpm tracks that’s good for opening sets and making out, and CFCF is really good.

Genghis Tron – “Recursion” (CFCF Remix) (mp3)

The Teenagers – “Sunset Beach” (CFCF Remix) (mp3)

    CFCF – “Claudio” (mp3)

From the future: Does anything capture the early 2000s’ particular breed of casual white misogyny and turpitude better than lyrics in The Teenagers songs? Keeping that remix up here as a time capsule of attitudes to avoid.

  • Lulu Rouge

    Lulu Rouge – “Bless You”

Lulu Rouge is an earthquake of subtlety. Booming and simultaneously still. Constant build, constant release. I don’t know where the peaks end and the valleys begin.

Their latest album, Bless You, a perfect example of a distinctly Danish type of dub techno, also reminds me of the days when Massive Attack ruled my discman, and Portishead put me to sleep every night. From the same camp as Trentemøller (who was originally a member of the group) the two men in Lulu Rouge have a long list of credits. T.O.M. recently co-produced the Fagget Fairys’ first single “Uzela” and is a former Danish DJ champion. Buda has had his fingers in just about every electronic production that’s come out of Denmark in the last 10 years. He was also the man behind those Run Jeremy bootlegs of Aphex Twin’s Windowlicker that turned so many heads.

Lulu Rouge & Trentemøller – “Ninna Nanne” ft. Alice Carrerri (yt)

Lulu Rouge – “Bless You” (MKLSMPSN Remix) (yt)

ps. I’ve already posted some incredible bootlegs and edits they’ve done, including this gem, which deserves another mention:

From the future: I figured I should probably also post those Run Jeremy bootlegs I mentioned in this post, for fun.

  • Jackpot – Move in the Light (Hampus Drake & Serge Santiago Edit)

Stockholm’s Hampus Drake has begun working with London’s Serge Santiago in both production and some label stuff. The first pairing of their production is a remix of Jackpot.

I’m going to use this opportunity to say that I love Serge Santiago’s sound. He makes the biggest room disco ever. Maybe like five DJs a week get to play to the kinds of crowds that deserve that breed of “big”! Actually that might be a stretch too – If the monster in Cloverleaf was a DJ and he headlined a disco party the size of Puerto Rico he’d be able to play a lot of Serge Santiago.

Jackpot – “Move in the Light” (Hampus Drake & Serge Santiago Edit) (mp3)

    Pro Tip :
If you’re throwing a “banger” party and want a really successful night you should start out playing music like this instead of getting all hoover before peaktime.

  • Remix Sunday 132

From the future: this was the Remix Sunday that got us taken down, so not many people got a chance to grab it before Google got evil. Fingers crossed the baddies aren’t still crawling for these. By the way, I’ve managed to get all the old tracks back together, except one single remix, which no one still has (including the remixer) — do you, dear reader, have this song: Big Youth – “Skylarkin” (Mike Mago Remix)?
