Machinedrum and Praveen’s collaborative project, Sepalcure, is back with Fleur. Driven largely by crisp 2-step rhythms and lush atmospherics, this one is worth your money. Also check out their recent remix for the London-based group of Spaniards, Crystal Fighters.

Thank the god for the internet. Now that we can ustream basement grime parties in Shoreditch from the comfort of our New York apartments, find Shangaan electro music videos on youtube, and get ahold of fresh cumbia techno records made by adolescent boys at the moment they drop in Monterrey, there’s not a lot of real detective work left to be done for most DJs. Borders between genres of dance music blur as the auras of provinciality deteriorate with exposure, and classifications like “global bass” and “tropical” are being taken seriously, for better or for worse. As a DJ, one way to respond to this chaos is to take a purist attitude: to let juke be juke and reggaeton be reggaeton, even though that Tego Calderon track would sound really sweet with triplet toms and an 808 hi-hat roll. The other way to go is to just surf the post-modern wave into the hyperreal, slapping whatever sounds god together and hoping things turn out alright in the end. That’s what DJ Orion has been doing for a while now. His new Animus EP cuts up 3ball guarachero and splices it together with brostep standards and some Nola bounce for good measure. Saadi is current with a new single. Clocking in at just under 2 minutes, “Clotheslines” is short and sweet. A sort of melancholy and final farewell to summer. The single comes with remixes, including a superb dub by our friend Douster.

Everyone has their own take on how the independent music industry (if that’s even an appropriate term anymore) is going to sustain itself in this new decade. Some people say artists will make most of their money touring. Some people claim they can continue to support themselves with record sales (most of those people aren’t artists). Up-and-comings leak their records first, let the internet media dust settle, and then take them to the distributors. And then there are those reckless few who just release everything for free and feed their empty bellies with blog love and compliments. They may be lying on cots in their mothers’ basements like 19th century Russian consumptives, smoking Top tobacco and smiling into the pallid glow of their Macbooks. Jim Sellars, the young Australian behind Electric Sea Spider, is one of those people (except for that last part, I’m just speculating). has taken the producer away from the reverbed emotional lethargy of The Thief (2009) and the trippy ambiance of Fear God Fear Satan (2008) and In Lucid Dreams (2009), toward a more shuffled post-Dilla stumble that could be compared to the likes of Baths and Slumgullion.

After years of underage drinking, today I finally turn 21. I’ve been waiting my whole life for this day and now that its finally here, I’ve been dancing since 12am this morning. Soon I will be Atlantic City clubbing and blowing the little money I have. Since it’s about a two hour bus ride, I have my playlist ready which will keep me in high spirits.

I don’t know where Busy Signal is getting all these instrumentals. One could imagine him running through the halls of Warner Brothers with a burlap sack full of studio tapes slung over his shoulder. I can’t think of a single other artist in hip hop, dancehall or reggaeton who so avidly jumps to voice over the dubs from just about anything that blows up on the radio. Let’s just say, “Big up Owl City” is not a phrase you hear every day.

It’s amazing what a little bass drum can do sometimes. Headshotboyz take the elements of Mount Kimbie’s wallowing sentimental soundscape, line ‘em up to a no-swing pulse, nail them together with some friendly quarter note kicks, sprinkle in a little egg-shaky-shaky and SHAZAM… you can dance to it!

These days, it sounds as if the women who used to sing from the front line in popular bassline and garage tracks are now just standing in some far corner of the room, trying to get a word in. I dig it.

Chimney Records just dropped the Sex Appeal Riddim and it’s got some big names on it. Movado’s verse isn’t on the riddim video for some inexplicable reason, so here’s his track.

How did I miss this song?

Old friends of Palms Out, Savage Skulls, have been working hard on a barrel full of remixes – my favorite of which is for the sweet Danish songstress, Oh Land. Another old friend of Palms Out – Kasper Bjørke – discovered Oh Land and signed her to the danish imprint Fake Diamond last year. Now, she is the next big thing on Sony Epic in the States, immediately signed after a stellar SXSW performance. The remix package for “Sun of a Gun” is golden, also including a gorgeous remix from Yuksek, and solid mixes from Ian Pooley and Kris Menace.

Sean Roman made a real impression on us this past February with his soul splashed house hit “Lick.” Now the Ontario based artist is back with “What To Do” — a steady summer jam filled with encouraging vocal loops that tickle just below the tan line.

Our very own B.Rich has been causing quite a stir with his alter-ego: Kastle.

He just sent over a much demanded track “Camera Phone”–a hoover laced, vocoder dripping steamer. Not one to be at all stingy, he also sent over a solid remix of Martin Buttrich. Look out for his debut EP – out soon on Starkey & Dev79′s Seclusiasis imprint.
