Maybe it’s been a foolish endeavor, and maybe I’m the only one who misses the blog ol’ days, but I’ve been giving it a shot. I’ve been working on restoring some of the old content, though much of it was lost. I’ve slowly been rebuilding the old remix sunday archives, and even posting the occasional new edition. And I’ve been writing again.
You can find all the label’s releases here, on bandcamp, or most anywhere you listen to music these days. I’ve still got copies of some of the old vinyl releases, and I recently released the first in a set of charitable cassette compilations to raise awareness about the continued [mis]use of broken windows policing methods.
Plus, I put together a playlists section with a handful of spotify lists that hopefully start to capture a [slightly] updated version of the moods we used to peddle. Give those a listen and a ❤ if you would be so kind. If you want to get in touch, just give me a holler. Oh, and if you prefer to just start playing all the music on this page before reading any further, go ahead and click ▶︎
Everyone has their own take on how the independent music industry (if that’s even an appropriate term anymore) is going to sustain itself in this new decade. Some people say artists will make most of their money touring. Some people claim they can continue to support themselves with record sales (most of those people aren’t artists). Up-and-comings leak their records first, let the internet media dust settle, and then take them to the distributors. And then there are those reckless few who just release everything for free and feed their empty bellies with blog love and compliments. They may be lying on cots in their mothers’ basements like 19th century Russian consumptives, smoking Top tobacco and smiling into the pallid glow of their Macbooks. Jim Sellars, the young Australian behind Electric Sea Spider, is one of those people (except for that last part, I’m just speculating). has taken the producer away from the reverbed emotional lethargy of The Thief (2009) and the trippy ambiance of Fear God Fear Satan (2008) and In Lucid Dreams (2009), toward a more shuffled post-Dilla stumble that could be compared to the likes of Baths and Slumgullion.
From the future: as far as I can tell, Sellars continues to make music as Electric Sea Spider, but he’s also been making some extremely captivating music as Yunzero.
Our own LOL Boys bring the original mugger into dungeonous territory. Catch the boys at our showcase next Friday, Oct. 22 @ Pachita in New York alongside so many other Palms Out family members. And look out for their new EP, LDR, out on Palms Out in December.
From the future: Blaqstarr – “Pressure” has been lost to the sands of time, including, inexplicably, the youtube video. If I find the mp3 I’ll put it up here for posterity.
Exploited Records will be celebrating its 3rd anniversary with a massive party at the Villa in Berlin on Saturday, October 16th Exploited has also released a free compilation of 8 brilliant tracks to go with the anniversary, including this Modeselektor edit of Siriusmo’s “Wow” – Enjoy.
After years of underage drinking, today I finally turn 21. I’ve been waiting my whole life for this day and now that its finally here, I’ve been dancing since 12am this morning. Soon I will be Atlantic City clubbing and blowing the little money I have. Since it’s about a two hour bus ride, I have my playlist ready which will keep me in high spirits.
