I revived an old music blog from the early 2000s?

Maybe it’s been a foolish endeavor, and maybe I’m the only one who misses the blog ol’ days, but I’ve been giving it a shot. I’ve been working on restoring some of the old content, though much of it was lost. I’ve slowly been rebuilding the old remix sunday archives, and even posting the occasional new edition. And I’ve been writing again.

You can find all the label’s releases here, on bandcamp, or most anywhere you listen to music these days. I’ve still got copies of some of the old vinyl releases, and I recently released the first in a set of charitable cassette compilations to raise awareness about the continued [mis]use of broken windows policing methods.

Plus, I put together a playlists section with a handful of spotify lists that hopefully start to capture a [slightly] updated version of the moods we used to peddle. Give those a listen and a ❤ if you would be so kind. If you want to get in touch, just give me a holler. Oh, and if you prefer to just start playing all the music on this page before reading any further, go ahead and click ▶︎

  • Mailbox: cupsy & cybersona888 – GNGSTA

This is another example of the kind of stuff I was writing about yesterday. But where I hesitated to call yesterday’s tracks internetcore, this one fits that bill much better.

We’re still in the same universe I was describing, heavily reliant on the building blocks of jungle: chopped amens and short, round, 808-like bass hits. But here cupsy (an artist based in Colorado Springs who also releases music under the name Dream Entact) and cybersona888 (who I can’t find any info about) definitely do head much further down the breakcore rabbithole. There’s also a marked attempt (conscious or instinctive) to incorporate elements of other internet genres. There are moments full of evil reese and post-gabber kick fills that–in this context–manage to function like a reprieve from the breakbeat mania. Large portions of the track also include a layer of [probably] memphis rap acapella that sits low enough in the mix to be mostly indecipherable, but clear enough to be a nod to the Russian drift phonk that ruled TikTok and Reels for a while a couple of years ago (I’ve got a soft spot for that stuff).

There are a lot of ingredients in this pot, but it all works together nicely. No bandcamp for this, but find it for streaming all over.

    PUR100 – Nobody Can

Ice-cold and club-ready cut from Parisian producer PUR100 (Florian Jozefowicz). This is one of those tracks that could work just as well as a transition tool as it could as a peak time roller. Falling somewhere between midtempo throwback UK hardcore and breakbeat-driven electro, this has all the puzzle pieces in their right place: sharp drums, gritty reese, minor-key synth melodies, and nicely detached vocal sample. Big choon here. PUR100 was kind enough to offer this up here as a free download, but if you’re enjoying this, consider throwing him a few bucks on bandcamp (it’s also available on the streamers).

    SLEEPYLYCHEE – Deep Bongo

More music tuned for the club, these are from New York’s SLEEPYLYCHEE (Yuwei Shang), who sent over two dubby bits of left-field techno a few weeks ago. I don’t know much about SLEEPYLYCHEE, but apart from producing and DJing, she curates common.wavs, a collective and party series with a monthly on bedcrumb show. Their next event is May 20th at Mood Ring. If SLEEPYLYCHEE’s own productions are an indication, I expect the music there will be really good, and the party absolutely worth checking out. You can find both of these tracks on bandcamp or for streaming, but SLEEPYLYCHEE was also kind enough to let me share with you one of the mp3s below.

    cupsy – code_ex

Finally is a new one from cupsy (Reese Rose), a Colorado Springs-based artist whom I’ve written about a couple of times before, the last time in 2023. In the time since, she’s really refined her production–edging away from manic breakcore and online jungle into a realm of precision-programmed micro drum and bass. This track still has the pleasant freneticism of breakcore, but it’s been buffed into something hyperclean, with only whispers remaining of the source breakbeats amidst a barrage of darting sequenced drums. The melodic content, though definitely enjoyable, is almost superflous; the song means to draw all attention to the drums’ serpentine paths. No bandcamp here, but you can find this on streamers, or grab the mp3 below.

    cupsy – somewhere, forever

I’ve written about Colorado Springs-based producer cupsy before. Where their work in the past has been further into the frenetic side of breakcore, this piece they sent over recently is more tender and contemplative. Still high energy stuff though, which I think is cupsy’s bag (or cup, as the case may be). No bandcamp here, but you can find this on streamers, or grab the mp3 below.

    Swimming Paul – Focus

I’ve also posted a Swimming Paul track before. The London-based French producer seems to have an effective promotion machine behind him—and he seems to have started to catch the wave of success that’s been elevating the post-Fred Again school of producers to great heights. It seems deserved though, his output of singles has been near-constant in the past year or two, and they’re always contemporary and effective tunes, if perhaps a touch straightforward. He doesn’t have a bandcamp, but all of his work is on the streamers, and his team was kind enough to let me provide the mp3 of this track for download below.

Ton Mise – Moon Behind The Eyelids

Ton Mise is a Nagano-based artist who sent over the title track from his newest EP, Moon Behind the Eyes, out on Chicago label Satellite Era. He describes the track as “quiet drum’n’bass, like being behind the moon” which feels accurate. It’s melodically sweet and pensive stuff, but framed in the context of well-balanced and skeletal DnB. The whole EP is really compelling, and worth checking out. Grab it on bandcamp or for streaming all over.

  • Mailbox: shiro12 – Afterimage / 残像

More of that dreamy online jungle/y2k breakcore I’ve written about a few times previously. This time from producer shiro12, who I don’t know much about except that they describe themselves as “home-bound.” I assume they’re located in Japan, but I’m not actually sure about that either. Again, as is the case with this strain of revivalism, what’s probably most important is that they’re online, and their music is too.

    No bandcamp, so stream away.
